Controlling wildfires is not always a good idea.

Here is what I wrote about the subject in 1981 and it is even more important today.  It is a followup to a previous post ‘An Open Letter to the President…’.

The above text is from Shepherds’ Compleat Early Nineteenth Century Woodworker, 1981, 2012, as is the following cartoon.

  1. As I tell everyone that will listen…the federal government is not your friend…never has been and never will be.

  3. “All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?” — Monty Python

I wholeheartedly agree that the fire suppression policies of the major Federal land-holding agencies — Forest Service and BLM are the top two — during the 20th Century were fatally flawed. These policies are being revised and improved, though it may prove too late for all those forests which have not already been clear-cut by the private companies to which those very same agencies have practically given the trees.

Mr. Shepherd, your open letter is a laudatory one which, if properly enacted, would provide all of the benefits you have outlined. Regrettably, the current standards of “compromise” in Washington, D.C. would castrate such a proposal.

However, “Hedge,” the notion that the government is out to ruin the world or destroy all that you hold dear or …insert any other paranoid delusions here… is incorrect and unwelcome politically-motivated posturing in an otherwise enjoyable blog on the old lifeways. And yes, I as a reader of this blog, can identify your comment as “unwelcome.” 🙂

  4. Nicely and politely said Joe. I’d prefer to keep this blog in the “woodworking” section of my bookmarks, not the “paranoid right-wing ideologue” section…
